How Radio Frequency Wireless Charging Works

Radio frequency (RF) wireless charging uses radio frequencies to charge any electrical device like a regular cord. There are different forms of wireless charging, but radio frequency uses electromagnetic waves, not induced magnetic fields. For example, using your wi-fi router and how it sends signals to your computer and smartphone, RF wireless charging is similar in that it uses frequencies to send power from a wireless charger to the receiver. The converted electricity becomes the device’s power source.

To make radio frequency wireless charging, two major parts are needed: the transmitter for frequency waves, and the receiver in the system that picks up the waves to make the voltage in the phone. RF wireless charging differs from magnetic-based charging by the physical look of both forms. Inductive charging uses an electromagnetic field with a coil, but has its physical limitations in size and shape for an effective wireless charge. It can only be constructed with a large, flat device that have the room to create with a coil. RF, however, has their receiver based on the electronic circuitry and is not limited by its positioning for an effective wireless connection.

Compared to induction, RF wireless charging is not restricted by measurements, allowing it to accommodate devices that induction cannot. Because RF wireless charging does not have the same physical limitations in size and shape, the receiver can be built into smaller devices. As these devices are becoming smaller, plugging things to charge and handling small plugs will be a big hassle. With RF wireless charging, one can drop their device anywhere and it still charges.

There are different form of radio frequency charging. Far-field RF is the emission of it in an open space with a transmitter locating an RF receiver in a certain area as long as the device is in that area it will charge in. Far-field RF wireless charging is limited in its charging capability because a lot of energy is wasted in open space. With near-field RF wireless charging, it allows for a full charge and provides users with an easy charge that does not take very long. Users can simply drop their phone in a charging station and it will recharge without problem.

With everything being connected, having all of our devices work automatically and do things quickly is the new way of the world. As these devices evolve, they are also getting more mobile. This means a lot more small devices are being integrated into our everyday work and social life at home, as well as the more advanced sectors like medicine and law. Having to handle many wires and constantly plugging in cords is becoming too much. That is why wireless charging is the new thing for us. By letting users simply put their device into a charging station, wireless power is now part of every environment we touch
